Thoughts on Cooperative Learning

It seems there’s a lot of conversation about cooperative learning/group work. Maybe we can target some specific strategies that people have found helpful. Who’s having success?
I found this website that is talking about group work in the business world. This description sounds familiar…
“You find yourself in small group hell, looking on hopelessly as various members go off on tangents,
Dominate the discussion, shrink into the woodwork, breeze through the project quickly, or allow a few
Lucky members to do all the work”.
Check it out at http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-6317_11-1036579.html

I’ve often thought that it’s pretty significant that the world of business is embracing progressive teaching techniques, so why are they so controversial in schools? Thoughts?
